Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief

I LOVE FANTASY STORIES! Haha. I have always been interested in ancient Greek mythology. Heck, I even went for a museum exhibition on ancient Greek mythology. And I love reading books which intertwined fantasy, Greek mythology etc, thereby explaining my love for Harry Potter and Everworld (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everworld). So this is the perfect movie for me. :)

Synopsis:

It's the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus and assorted monsters have walked out of the pages of high school student Percy Jackson's Greek mythology texts and into his life. And they're not happy: Zeus' lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect, being the son of Poseidon.

After his remedial Maths teacher, Mrs. Dawson turns into a Fury and attacks him, Percy is whisked away by his satyr protector (who used to be handicapped best mate), Grover to Camp Half-Blood. On their drive there, they were attacked by a minotaur, who took Percy's mother, Sally Jackson away.

As Percy finds himself caught between angry and battling gods, he and his friends (which include Grover and Annabeth, the daughter of Athena) embark on a cross-country adventure to save Sally, who turns out to be in the clutches of Hades and to plead with both Zeus and Hades his innocence.

The movie was okay, some parts seemed a tad lame. Annabeth seemed a bit too old for Percy. And the story seemed a bit Harry Potterish what with the hero being followed by two trusty sidekicks, who factored the Hermione and Ron elements pretty well. Even the name of their camp, Camp Half Blood, the term sounds Harry Potterish. Percy's not as ke lian as Harry though. He has a loving mother who sacrifices a lot for him, has dyslexia (because his brain is hardwired for only reading ancient Greek, we are told) and ADHD (because his reflexes are super fast to always be combat-ready). And his father talks to him sometimes in his head.

After the movie, I went to wiki more about the series and it turns out there were a lot of parts that the movie failed to mention, such as key characters Clarisse (Are's daughter and main bully in Camp Half Blood) and Thalia (Zeus' daughter) and of course they didn't mention anything about the propecy of a demigod (meaning a son/daughter of any of the Big Three, namely Zeus, Hades and Poiseidon) on reaching the age of 16 will make a decision that will save/destroy the gods of Olympus). Am thinking if I should search for a book meant for middle-schoolers. Hehz. Well, I'm sure the remaining movies in the series would be an awfully exciting watch. :)
